Day 11–Rockwood Park CG, New Brunswick, Canada, Reversing Falls, Irving Nature Center

on Saturday, June 22, 2013

After a laid back leisurely day yesterday we decided we needed to get out and see the Reversing Falls. We were told it was best to see them at high tide so we made sure we got there at the right time.

Of course getting there was no easy feat. Everything thing around here is basically unmarked with loads of one –way streets. Ron has deemed Saint John’s as one of the most difficult places to get around. This, from  the man with GSP implanted in his brain!!!

After 30 minutes of retracing our tracks we finally arrived at our destination and were not disappointed. The tide had come in and watching the rapids with its many whirlpools was fascinating. The phenomenon of the river flowing one way and the ocean the other, colliding with one another and forming reversing falls was quite interesting. It is  very difficult to get the concept in pictures so we planned on going back at low tide to see the difference.

The water is coming in over the rocks from the direction of the ocean at the top of the pictures into the river at the bottom of the pictures.

WE returned when the tide was going out to see if we could tell the  difference and if the reversal of the waters being pulled back out into the ocean was  easy to discern.

Yes you could see the waters pulled back out to sea.  Pretty cool!

Interestingly enough we ran into the same group of campers here boon docking in the parking lot adjacent to the Reversing Falls. Go figure.

After spending time watching the waters reverse themselves we headed to the Irving Nature Park. If it wasn’t for the map with the names of the streets we would have never found this hidden gem. The park sits on the Bay of Fundy in  a lovely wooded area.

There was a 6.5 Km circle tour around the island that we opted to take hoping to catch some beautiful vistas.

Along the way we ran into some very beautiful deer and lots of foxes. The fox that we got a great picture  of was not the least bit intimidated by people and  he was very close to us.

As we drove the perimeter we stopped for some views of the sound. Again at low tide.

All in all it was a good day. The weather has been iffy with short periods of sunshine, then rain and then a drastic change in temperatures all during the day. Not really sure how to dress, so layers it is.

Tomorrow will be heading to Bay of Fundy National Park. We heard the road into the park is a bit of a challenge. We shall see.
