Day 9–Hilltop Campground–Reversing Falls

on Thursday, June 20, 2013

Had a  rough night last night – knee pain like a throbbing abscessed tooth. I wonder when I’ll be back to normal. Normal for me that is??????

We got  a little later start then we had planned. Instead of getting to the reversing falls location 2 hours before high tide we got there one hour before so it was difficult to get a good view of the tides reversing themselves.

The tides in this area are 20 feet high so we were hoping for some good action. Again didn’t get to see much.

When we got to the location we were surprised to see several campers set up boon docking. Ron was all bummed out because he would have liked to camped there as well. Maybe next time around.

r0n Note: Could have actually monitored tide changes! Other odd thing - 4 RV’s  No People either morning or afternoon?.

Although we didn’t get to see the reversing falls we did enjoy the beautiful scenery and took a short hike.

Since we were at peak tide we decided to go back to the MH and prepare for our travels in Canada. Ron was talking to another transient camper and his original plan was to go into Canada to visit a  friend. However, once he checked out the restrictions he opted out. He is a retired law enforcement person and left his gun with his daughter in Connecticut and doesn’t like the idea that a border patrol officer might be asking to look at his stuff. And then he would have to give up his plants. He was so concerned about crossing the border that he gave us his e-mail address so we could let him know if we were in jail or not?????? Now I’m getting paranoid. We have crossed into Canada several times and the border guards have always been pleasant and welcoming. Not sure where he got his info.

When we arrived back at the CG two hours later we were met with a huge surprise. I was looking down getting my purse when Ron said “look at that!”  I looked up and there was our Jewel greeting us roaming free.  WHAT!!!! How did she get out?????? We were both thunderstruck at seeing her outside the MH.

r0n note: RV door opened and in locked position. I was sidetracked with Debbie asking if I had her sunglasses. My hands were full when she announced she had them and I just left!!!! Never did shut that door. To add to the drama they had mowed the lawn in front of the open door. I guess no one thought it was odd that the door was open and no one was around except poor Jewel.

Our first thought was that someone had broken into the MH because when we rounded the corner the MH door was wide open. Inside nothing was out of place and both our laptops were in the same location.

After some thought we realized that we had both got sidetracked when we left and neither of us had shut the door. DUH< DUH< DUH>. We were just grateful that Jewel didn’t stray from the MH and waited patiently for us.  Love that little girl.

Later that afternoon we went back to the location of the reversing  falls at low tide to check it out . This time we brought Jewel with us and double checked the  MH door.

The tides in this location are 20 foot tides.

Jewel was happy to be out hiking in the fields and along the trails and we were very happy that we hadn’t lost her forever.

After dinner we planned for our morning exit to Canada. Ron has been busy planning stops and I have been compiling a grocery list. We will stop in Calais to shop because from what we were told groceries in Canada are very expensive.

It’s over the border tomorrow and we’ll see if crossing on the East coast is any different then the West coast.
