We woke to overcast skies and intermittent rain. It was a dreary day so we got a slow start. Initially we were undecided if we would hang out or take a hike. As the morning progressed there were patches of clear sky then rain again.
After some discussion we opted to try for a hike. I wanted to take a short hike while Ron wanted to do the longer, more difficult hike. When he asked me I said “we’ll see.” In my language that means “no” but to Ron that means I said “yes.” LOL - OK then, we were off to the Laverty Falls, a 5 km downhill hill hike!
Before we left, Ron had to get a picture of the trees right outside our window. Spooky little trees with faces looking in at us. If they started singing and dancing we were out of here. LOL
r0n Note: This was Deb when I mentioned the long Route!
Deb Note: Ha Ha!
The weather was weird feeling, both cold and humid/hot at the same time. We began the hike wearing our rain jackets but quickly shed those after a few hundred feet.
We had to travel down a 3 mile gravel road to get to the hiking trail. We both thought there would be no one around but were surprised to see several cars parked near the trail head and groups of people preparing to take the hike.
r0n Note: My Next Rig…………..
Once we looked at the trail and realized how rough it was Ron went back to the car to get our hiking poles.
The farther along the trail we walked the steeper it got. As we were walking down the trail we both discussed the fact that going down was OK, despite the rough trail, but coming back up might be a real challenge.
After hiking up and down the hills for an hour we finally arrived at our destination. I must say it was worth the effort! Especially if you’re into hiking and like waterfalls as much as we do.
By the time we arrived the weather had cleared. There was bright sunshine and it was very hot and humid.
After enjoying some time at the falls and cooling off we headed to the trail for our journey back. Since we would be hiking uphill we thought it would take us longer to get back. Some of the uphill areas of the trail seemed extremely difficult but we pushed through. We didn’t really have a choice. Overall we did very well. We had read it was a 2- 4 hour hike and we managed to get back to our car in one hour. Not so bad for a couple of old folks!! One hour down and one hour back.
Although we were tired, hot, sweaty and in need of a long shower we opted to stop at Laverty Lake to check it out.
We decided to stop at an overlook and hoped that the road we saw in the distance was not the one we would be taking out of here in the morning. Those gray stripes are steep hills not waterfalls! YIKES!!!!! We don’t want to be pulling those grades towing a vehicle.
Back at the MH we both took a much needed shower. I made dinner and we relaxed for a while but not before taking Jewel for another walk.
Around 7 PM we headed out to see if the tides had come in port in the town of Alma. We wanted to get some pictures of the boats in the harbor actually floating instead of sitting on the sea floor. I think we read the tide charts incorrectly because once again the tide was out. One of our neighbors told us that the tides come in quickly and go out quickly so it would be easy to miss a high tide if we got to our destination even a little bit too late. Not sure how valid that info was but it made sense because we were following the tide charts closely.
Then it was off for another shorter hike to Dickson Falls. This was only a 1.5 km hike downhill.
The trail here really wasn’t a trail but a series of stairs that reminded us of the Flume, in New Hampshire. Those who walk down must walk back up. LOL
The falls were quite nice although not as spectacular as Laverty Falls.
The area was very beautiful and felt like an enchanted forest.
Back at the MH we settled in for the night having no doubt that we would sleep very soundly after our day of hiking. Tomorrow we will be driving to Hopewell Rocks.
