We spent a quiet evening and night enjoying the serenity of this little out of the way CG. It has been perfect and we were able to get out for a scenic drive recommended by Jeff the CG owner. We got a late start, finally relaxing instead of constantly running, and never left the CG until 2 PM.
Our goal was to get a picture of the Mount Katahdin and at 5, 268 feet is the highest mountain in Maine. Jeff told us we would get a great picture from this dirt road off of Route 11.
The drive was quite nice with very little traffic. Out first stop was at a small rest area along the Penobscot River. Amazing, that on little route 11 there are rest areas but none on the 400 miles of Trans Canada Highway we traveled?????
As we drove along highway 11 we noticed a lot of barns and buildings in a state of disrepair of just falling down.
We ventured upon the dirt road suggested and did manage to get a picture of the mountain. The picture wasn’t as clear as we would have liked because of the haze.
Ron thought we should continue to travel down the dirt road hoping for a better shot. As we were driving we noticed a dirt bike behind us so we pulled over to let the kid by so he wouldn’t continue to eat the dust from our car. Off he went at a high rate of speed.
We made some stops along the way but never really got another good view of the mountain.
About seven miles into the woods we saw the kid again having some problems with his dirt bike sputtering. We kept going and stopped at a bridge out in the middle of nowhere.
There was a pick-up truck parked in the lot adjacent to the bridge so we knew we weren’t alone 8 miles down the dirt road. We took a walk to the shore line and while down there heard the sputtering of that dirt bike. The boy pulled into the same spot and we saw him go sit by a large boulder.
When we were walking back to our car we noticed he was banging his head against the stone so we asked him how he was doing. He said not so good because he ran out of gas!!! Really??? Eight miles from the main road then another 20 miles to get gas!!!!!
We had no way to get the gas out of our car so we offered him a ride. He declined but we weren’t just going to leave this kid out in the middle of nowhere. As we were trying to come up with a plan the man that owned the pick-up truck came out of the woods with his dog.
I asked him if he could help the boy, maybe put his bike in the truck and drive him to a gas station. As it turned out the man had a full gas can in his truck and was able to fill the boy’s tank. The boy would have not said anything if we hadn’t stopped to ask him if there was problem and again when the man in the pick-up truck showed up, the boy never approached him, I did. I think the boy was a little shy but that would get him nowhere in this situation.
We have encountered so many nice people both in Canada and now up here in Maine. Everyone is so willing to stop and help. The boy tried to pay for the gas but the man would not accept. Happily, the boy and his dirt bike were back on the road and we were happy too. If there had been no resolution we would have figured a way to get him and his dirt bike back home.
The ride into the woods was if not anything else interesting. It always amazes us that there are so many hidden gems where you wouldn’t expect them.
Back at the CG we settled in for the evening enjoying the good weather and peacefulness of the place. Love the sign at the entrance to the CG.
And to all a Good-Night!
